US: Maybelline-Pinterest's new mental health campaign - Are people keen on discussing mental health?

Earlier this year, Pinterest released a report exploring mental health topics popular among Gen Z and Millennial users and what young people do to improve their mental well-being. And just recently, cosmetics and personal care brand Maybelline partnered with Pinterest to launch a behavioral health campaign with the aim of helping younger audiences ‘navigate anxiety and depression.’

What do social media users in the US have to say on the topic of mental health?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 88% of respondents who use social media one or more times a day (daily social media users) agree with the statement that “it’s important for people to talk about mental health.” A similar proportion of the general US population also agrees with the statement (86%).

But while most daily social media users in the US believe mental health should be discussed, a significant proportion of them (64%) also believe there is a stigma around seeking mental health treatment in the US - according to results of a separate YouGov poll from February 2023.

When it comes to the impact of social media on mental health, results from a similar poll held in February 2023 reveal that daily social media users in the US are slightly more likely than the general population to believe social media has more of a positive effect on their mental health (24% vs. 20%).

In both cases of daily social media users and the general population, they are more likely to believe social media has more of a negative impact on their mental health (37% each).
