2024 Resolution Results: Most Consumers Staying on Track

Call it peer pressure or force of habit, seldom are New Year’s Celebrations complete without ambitious resolutions for the year ahead. With a third of 2024 done, we explore YouGov data to see how closely people have stuck to their New Year’s resolutions.

An analysis of commitment

More than three in five consumers (62%) across the 17 international markets surveyed say they have closely stuck to their New Year’s resolutions this year while nearly a third (32%) say they haven’t.

Further, men are more likely than women (65% vs. 59%) to claim to have closely stuck to their New Year’s resolutions for 2024. More than a third of women (35%) across markets haven’t stuck closely to their resolutions - three in ten men (30%) haven’t either.

Indonesians have been the most resolute, a majority of whom (88%) say they have stuck closely to their 2024 promises, followed by respondents in the UAE (69%) and India (68%).

In Europe, the French show the most commitment at 65%, followed by Italians (59%) and Brits (59%). Americans aren’t too far behind - 56% have stuck closely to resolutions.

Singaporeans are the least likely to say they have stuck closely to resolutions this year. Nonetheless, nearly half of them have (48%).

On the other hand, 46% of Singaporeans claim to have not stuck closely to their New Year’s resolutions this year - the most likely across markets to say so. Danes (45%), Spanish (43%) and Poles (42%) are some of the other respondents in our survey who are among the most likely to say they haven’t stuck closely to their resolutions.

Finally, Germany is the only market on our list that records a double-digit figure (16%) for its proportion of respondents who say they don’t know whether or not they have stuck closely to their resolutions.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 17 markets with sample sizes varying between 500 and 2040 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in January 2024. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
