Two in five football fans would subscribe to “Premflix”

Recent reports have indicated that the Premier League is considering launching its own subscription television service – in what would be a major blow to the UK’s football broadcasters. 

New YouGov data shows that there could certainly be appetite for this kind of offering. Some 42% of fans would subscribe to a Premier League subscription service, while 49% would not. Of those who think they would subscribe in the event of the Premier League launching such a service, 71% say that they would watch more football as a result.

Another illustration of the potential appeal of this kind of service: when we look at how fans watch football, some 37% say they only watch games involving a team they support. But in the event of a Premier League subscription service, 33% of these fans would be tempted to watch more football matches. Yet another: among football fans who don’t watch very much of the sport on television (23%), some 22% say they would watch more broadcast football matches if this kind of service were available.

Our data also suggests that, if an all-football, all-the-time style offering arrived on these shores, a third of British football fans who currently have access to these services would cancel their existing subscriptions to other broadcasters (32%) – and just over a third don’t know either way (36%). 

When we ask about the influence Premier League football has on subscriptions to incumbent broadcasters, 84% of Sky subscribers who are football fans, 61% of TNT subscribers, and 16% of Amazon subscribers say it has at least some influence on their decision to stay with these channels. YouGov polled 876 British football fans online on 12-13 March 2025. The survey was carried out through YouGov Surveys: Self-serve.
