How do people view those working in retail? Mostly positive, but over a third have no opinion

A recent YouGov survey asked consumers across 17 international markets whether they have a positive or negative view of retail workers. Survey results show that more than half of all consumers across the markets we surveyed (57%) say they have a positive view of them. Few (5%) say they have a negative view of retail workers. More than a third (35%) have no opinion, viewing workers in retail neither negatively nor positively.

Demographic data reveals that the youngest cohort (ages 18-24) we survey are the most likely across age groups (8%) to view people working in the retail industry negatively.

Moving on to data from individual markets, we see that consumers in the UAE (69%) and India (68%) are the most likely across markets to say they view people working in the retail industry in a positive light. Consumers in Spain follow at third position overall (65%) and are the most likely in Europe to see retail workers positively.

Hong Kongers (41%) and Americans 46%) are the least likely to see people working in retail positively. At 58%, nearly three in five Britons see retail workers positively.

Hong Kong (8%), US (7%), France (7%), Germany (7%) and Canada (7%) are markets where consumers are most likely across markets to say they have a negative view of people working in the retail industry.

Danes, on the other hand, are the least likely to agree (2%) - more than half of them (53%) in fact see retail workers positively. Explore our living data - for free.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 17 markets with sample sizes varying between 500 and 2040 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in Janaury 2023. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
