The Global Olympics Village: Unveiling how people plan on following the Paris 2024 Olympics

Every four years, the world gathers its breath in anticipation of its quadrennial dose of sports’ history-defining moments. This year, as the Olympics arrive, an earlier piece looked at why people watch the games. Here, we discuss how they plan on following the event.

Among consumers who plan to follow theParis 2024 Olympics, most (65%) will tune into TV broadcasts to keep up with the games. Nearly three in ten will opt for online streaming (29%) and social media updates (28%).

YouGov’s demographic data reveals that similar proportions of men and women who intend to follow the Olympics this year will do so via TV broadcasts, while men are more likely than women (33% vs. 26%) to take to online streaming.

Men are also more likely than women (30% vs. 22%) to read Olympic coverage on news sites and newspapers.

Global village, local screens: Plans to follow Paris 2024, by market

Italians (81%) are most likely across markets to follow the Olympics through TV broadcasts. Brits (74%), Spaniards (71%) and Australians (71%) follow Italians.

In the US, Americans are most likely to follow the games through TV broadcasts (62%) followed by online streaming (32%).

As for reading coverage on news sites and newspapers, Australians lead (33%) and respondents in the UAE account for the largest proportion of those across markets (48%) who intend to follow the games via social media updates and online streaming (49%).

More than a quarter of respondents in the UAE (26%) will also follow the games at a sports bar or other venue broadcasting the event - the most likely to do so.
