Of decks and dice: 54% of people see those working in the gambling industry negatively

What do consumers think of people who work in the gambling industry?

YouGov surveyed people across 16 international markets asking respondents what they think of those who are employed by the gambling industry.

Survey results reveal that more than half of all respondents across markets (54%) say they have a negative view of people working in this space, while about one in ten (11%) say they view them positively. Nearly three in ten respondents (29%) hold no clear opinion.

Although over half of both men and women view people working in the gambling sector negatively, men are more likely than women (13% vs. 9%) to view them in a positive light.

Market-by-market

Urban indian consumers (21%) and Mexicans (20%) are the most likely across the 16 markets surveyed to say they have a positive view of people working in the gambling sector. Hong Kong (16%), Australia (15%), France (14%) and Canada (14%) are some of the other markets where respondents are most likely to have this view.

Indonesians (5%) and Danes (6%) are the least likely to agree - in fact a majority of Indonesians (86%) say they have a negative view of people working the gambling industry. A similar proportion (8%) of respondents in Sweden (that recently moved to comprehensively ban the use of credit for gambling) agree as well.

Brits (63%) follow Indonesians in saying they have a negative view as well, while Hong Kongers (at 37%, more than a third of them, nonetheless) are the least likely to have the same opinion. Notably, a gambling white paper British lawmakers introduced last year was touted to be the ‘biggest shake-up of the betting industry’ in nearly two decades.

Americans are more likely than Brits (13% vs. 7%) to say they view people working in the gambling space positively. Four in ten (43%) respondents in the US have a negative view of gambling jobs.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 16 markets with sample sizes varying between 500 and 2040 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in January 2024. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
