Football Buzz Movers – January 2024: AC Milan makes a Buzz

AC Milan’s Buzz score rose by nearly 10 points from 4.9 in December to 14.7 in January.

The team was in the news with respect to the racist abuse allegedly directed at its goalkeeper Mike Maignan in their away match against Udinese. Milan staged a walkout in the match as a mark of protest and then lit up their stadium in a stand against racism during their subsequent home match against Bologna.

Not far behind Milan in the Italian Buzz stakes are Juventus, who are currently placed second in the table, and went unbeaten during the whole month, setting up a potentially title-defining clash with Inter in early February (which they lost). Lazio, Atalanta and Atletico Madrid round off the list for Italy.

Over in the UK, clubs made relatively small improvements with Manchester United claiming the top spot. The Red Devils won both their FA Cup games in January, advancing to the fifth round. Celtic, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City were the other teams to feature.

In Germany, Werder Bremen claim the top spot with a 2.9-point gain, likely boosted by their shock Bundesliga win over Bayern Munich. Schalke, Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Liverpool also appear in the German segment of the list, albeit with relatively small upticks.

In Spain, PSG tops the list with an improvement of 6.6 points over their December Buzz score. PSG are currently leading the Lique 1 table. The French giants are closely followed by Las Palmas, who have given good account of themselves in their first season back in the top tier since the 2017/18 season, and are currently placed 9th on the La Liga points table. Bilbao, Vigo and Sevilla round off the list in Spain.

France too has an overseas club at the top position this month, with Liverpool gaining 4.8 points. In fact, RC Lens and Saint-Etienne are the only two domestic clubs to feature in France’s top five, the others being Manchester City and Real Madrid.
