YouGov - March 24th, 2025
Unveil the future of retail competition in EuropePurchase the report

The cost-of-living crisis in Europe has significantly reshaped retail competition. Discounters, private labels, and promotions have reached unprecedented market shares, while specialized shops such as butchers and bakers, known for their quality-oriented and higher-priced offerings, have experienced a decline in market share.

Despite lower inflation rates in most countries in 2024 compared to the record highs of 2023, price pressure continues to rise. Promotion shares have increased in Central and Eastern European countries like Poland (+4 percentage points), Slovakia, and Bulgaria (both +3 percentage points). The Czech Republic stands out with a promotion market share of 56%.

The trend of increasing market shares for discounters persists. In nearly all countries, discounters have solidified their positions, becoming market leaders in all Eastern European countries except Serbia.

Stay ahead of consumer behavior changes in a shifting market. Our latest report reveals how European shoppers are adapting to economic pressures, embracing value-driven choices, and relying more on promotions.
