Best grocery stores in America: 2025 YouGov rankings revealed

The grocery retail sector in the US remains highly competitive, with consumers prioritizing convenience, affordability, and quality. YouGov’s Grocery Store Rankings 2025 provides insights into consumer consideration trends, highlighting which brands are most favored across different demographics.

Walmart leads the overall rankings

Walmart leads grocery store consideration by a wide margin, with 63.3% of US adults saying they would consider the brand for their next shopping trip. It is also the top choice across all major demographic groups.

Among men, Walmart scores 61.6%, while among women, it leads with 64.6%. It is the preferred grocery store for Gen Z (63.2%), Millennials (62.8%), Gen X (64.0%), and Baby Boomers (63.3%).

Target follows in second place with a 42.5% Consideration score, while Aldi ranks third at 32.8%. Costco (31.8%) and Kroger (23.9%) complete the top five.

Most improved grocery brands

YouGov BrandIndex also tracks the grocery brands with the most significant improvements in consumer consideration over the past year. Amazon Fresh is gaining the most ground among shoppers, with Consideration reaching 12.0%, a 3.9 percentage point increase from the previous year.

Target follows with a 2.9 increase, rising from 39.6% to 42.5%. Walmart improves by 2.4 percentage points, from 60.9% to 63.3%, while Costco sees a similar 2 rise.

Sole grocery shoppers

Among consumers who are solely responsible for grocery shopping, Walmart remains the top choice with a Consideration score of 63.2%, followed by Target at 40.6% and Aldi at 34.1%. Costco (28.3%) and Kroger (24.3%) round out the top five.
