Comic-Con 2024 – Who's interested and why

A new YouGov survey of 1,135 US adults shows 32% of Americans are interested in Comic-Con. Breaking it down, 39% of men show interest compared with 25% of women. Age plays a big role too. Younger adults, aged 18-34, are the most enthusiastic, with 53% expressing interest. For those aged 35-54, interest drops to 33% and further to 15% among 55 and older audience. Among those interested, 26% are planning to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

What draws Americans to Comic-Con? Not necessarily comics, although they are in the mix. Movies top the list, with 62% excited to see them. Television shows follow at 50%, while video games attract 48%. Celebrity panels and appearances are a highlight for 47%, and 45% are keen on comics and books. Merchandise appeals to 42%, and cosplay has 35% of fans excited. Toys and action figures, anime and manga, and custom or handmade items also have a share of interest at 33%, 31%, and 29%, respectively. Fan meet-ups and networking events (29%), posters and banners (24%), and workshops and educational panels (21%) round out the list.

When it comes to keeping up with Comic-Con news, social media is the go-to source for three in five fans (66%).

Friends or family help a third stay updated (33%), while a quarter turn to news articles and blogs (25%). The official Comic-Con website is a source for 23%, and 17% rely on email newsletters.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. This study was conducted online on 22-23 July 2024, with a nationally representative sample of 1,135 adults (aged 18+ years) in the US, using a questionnaire designed by YouGov. Data figures have been weighted by age, race, gender, education, and region to be representative of all adults in the US (18 years or older), and reflect the latest population estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
