US: J. Crew hops on to the resale bandwagon - What do its customers think of secondhand shopping?

Specialty retailer, J. Crew, has launched a resale program titled ‘J. Crew Always’. Under its new banner, the company will be offering pre-owned items on its website and on its resale platform, thredUP (which, not too long ago, partnered with retailer, Torrid). Customers can also send currently owned J. Crew items to thredUP exchange for shopping credit. Similarly, the American retailer will be tapping into its ‘J. Crew Vintage’ collection as part of the resale initiative, to offer vintage styles in two of its stores.

How big are J. Crew’s customers on shopping secondhand?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 43% of J. Crew’s current customers agree with the statement that they “prefer to buy things second hand rather than new.” A slightly lesser number (40%) of the general US population agrees with the statement as well.

Currently, Ebay is the top choice (43%) for J. Crew buyers to purchase second-hand items from, followed by vintage/thrift shops (33%), suggests Profiles data.
