Nearly half of consumers view auto industry workers positively

A recent YouGov survey asked respondents across 17 international markets about their view of people working in the auto sector. Nearly half of all respondents (48%) view auto industry employees positively, while fewer than one in ten (9%) view them negatively. Nearly two in five respondents (39%) have neutral view of auto industry employees.

Upon exploring YouGov’s demographic data, we see that younger respondents are more likely to view people working in the auto space positively, than their older counterparts. For example, the youngest demographic we survey i.e. 18-to-24-year-olds are the most likely to have a positive view (54%), a sentiment that gets weaker as the respondents get older, with 55+ year olds (43%) being the least likely to have the same view.

But the proportion of respondents who see people working in the auto industry negatively are the same across age groups.

Indonesians most likely to have a positive view of those working in the automotive sector; Germans most likely to have a negative opinion

Indonesia accounts for the largest proportion of respondents across markets (81%) who have a positive view of people working in the automotive industry. Respondents in the UAE (73%) and India (72%) follow. Spanish (41%) and Italian (41%) consumers are the most likely to have a positive view in Europe.

The markets with the lowest proportion of respondents who view auto industry employees positively are Germany and Denmark (28% each). In fact, Germany (home to auto giants like Audi and Volkswagen) accounts for the largest proportion of respondents who have a negative view of people working in the auto sector (18%), followed by the French (13%) and Brits.

In the US, near-equal proportions of respondents say they have a positive (41%) or neutral (41%) view of people working in the auto space.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 17 markets with sample sizes varying between 500 and 2040 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in January 2024. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
