As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, Brits shift toward seasonal activities that blend relaxation, socialization, and exploration. YouGov Profiles data shows clear distinctions between men and women, as well as between age groups, in how they spend their autumn days.

Examining the differences and similarities in men and women’s interest in autumn time activities

Women tend to focus on social and leisurely activities. Visiting friends and family (59%) tops their list, followed closely by walking (56%) and shopping (55%). This highlights women’s preference for maintaining social connections and engaging in low-intensity outdoor activities during the season. Additionally, women show higher interest in cultural experiences, with theatre shows (35%) and concerts (31%) being popular choices.

In contrast, men prefer more active and event-based pastimes. Going to a bar (40%) and attending sporting events (24%) are favoured by men, while activities like working out (29%) and playing sports (18%) also feature prominently. Their participation in comedy shows (20%) suggests that men seek light-hearted entertainment to balance the autumn months.

Despite the differences, both men and women enjoy walking and traveling, reflecting a shared interest in staying active and making the most of the season’s mild weather.

Age Groups: Evolving Priorities with Age

Autumn activities vary significantly across age groups, reflecting evolving priorities at different life stages.

  • 18-34-year-olds gravitate towards entertainment and social events. Going to the movie theatres (41%) is a favourite activity, along with going to bars (36%) and working out (39%). Their tendency to try something new (34%) and attend concerts (30%) also indicates a desire for exploration and social interaction.
  • 35-54-year-olds adopt a more balanced approach. Visiting friends and family (57%) and walking (56%) dominate their autumn routines, while cultural experiences such as theatre shows (33%) and museums (30%) are also popular. This group values both social and intellectual enrichment.
  • 55+ respondents favour quieter activities. They enjoy walking (53%) and visiting friends and family (52%) but show less interest in concerts, theatres, or sporting events. Their engagement with outdoor performances (8%) and comedy shows (14%) is notably lower, suggesting a preference for relaxed activities.

Universal Favourites and Seasonal Trends

Some activities remain popular across genders and age groups, showcasing the universal appeal of the autumn season. Travel (36%) and walking (53%) offer opportunities to enjoy the changing landscape, while shopping (49%) helps Brits prepare for the festive season ahead. Indoor performances (33%) and museums (27%) provide cultural nourishment, no matter the demographic.

The data also highlights subtle seasonal differences. For instance, outdoor performances (11%) see a slight increase in participation during autumn, reflecting a willingness to enjoy the crisp weather before winter sets in.

In summary, autumn in the UK is a time for both connection and exploration. While women gravitate toward social engagements, and men lean toward sports and bars, all demographics find ways to savour the season, be it through scenic walks, cultural events, or festive preparations.
