Would people be interested to watch AI-generated musicians live in concert?

Lesley Simeon - August 8th, 2024

Earlier in 2022, Swedish pop band ABBA debuted its live virtual concert series in London, that featured holograms of the band members’ younger avatars belting out their yesteryear hits. American rock band Kiss is expected to follow suit.

Interest in events like these signal that live concerts need not necessarily feature artists performing live and audiences might enjoy concerts by musician’s virtual avatars – even if for the novelty factor. But would the same level of interest extend to musicians generated by artificial intelligence?

A recent YouGov Surveys: Serviced poll results reveal that nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents across 17 international markets express interest in attending concerts featuring AI-generated musicians. Almost one in five (19%) aren’t very interested in such concerts, while 40% aren’t interested at all.

Further, more men (28%) than women (20%) say they’d be interested in concerts featuring AI-generated musicians.

More than two in five women (43%) are not interested in such concerts at all, neither are 37% of men.

Data by individual markets surveyed:

Interested

Among all the countries surveyed, India takes the lead in being most interested in AI-musician concerts. More than three fourths of all Indians surveyed (57%) are interested. Respondents in the UAE (50%) and Indonesia (36%) follow.

In Europe, Poles (23%) lead in saying they would be interested in attending AI-generated musicians' concerts. More than one in ten Brits (14%) are interested as well. Danes (8%) and Americans (11%) are among the least likely to say they are interested in attending such a concert.

Not interested

More than a third of Hong Kongers (36%) are not very interested in attending concerts featuring AI-generated musicians, followed by Indonesians (34%).

Danes account for the largest proportion of those across markets (54%) who aren’t interested in concerts featuring AI-generated musicians at all (at 10%, they are also the most likely who aren’t sure about their interest levels too). The US (52%), Canada (52%), Great Britain (52%), Sweden (52%) are some other markets where consumers are the most likely to express disinterest as well.

People who don’t attend/plan on attending concerts

Americans (21%), Germans (19%) and Singaporeans (16%) are the most likely across markets to have no plans of attending or generally don’t attend concerts.
