Nearly 30% of consumers in our multi-market poll would buy second-hand exercise equipment
The physical fitness journey can get expensive - gym memberships, boutique fitness classes and the latest athleisure wear can cause costs to tick up. Exercise equipment also isn’t necessarily easy on the wallet.
A recent YouGov survey asked consumers across 17 international markets about which categories of products they would consider buying second-hand. Exercise/sports equipment are among categories of products consumers are least likely to consider second-hand versions of.
Nearly three in ten consumers (28%) across markets would buy pre-owned exercise/sports equipment.
The US tops our list of markets where consumers are most likely (43%) to consider purchasing pre-owned exercise or sports equipment, followed by consumers in Canada (40%) and Australia (40%)
Britons rank fourth, with over a third (36%) of them saying they would opt for second-hand fitness equipment as well.
In Asia, a quarter of Singaporeans would consider going second-hand, when it comes to exercise equipment purchases - the most likely in this region to say so.
Consumers from another Asian market surveyed - Indonesia - are the least likely across all markets to say they would buy second-hand fitness equipment. A little over one in ten consumers (11%) in this market are of this opinion. Hong Kong (18%) and France (18%) are some other markets where consumers are least likely to follow suit as well.

Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from
nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 17
markets with sample sizes varying between 500 and 2002 for each market. All surveys were
conducted online in February 2024. Data from each market uses a nationally representative
sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and
Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples. Learn
