UK: Electric car-buyers are expecting more luxury in their car than petrol car buyers

With luxury carmakers considering subscription-based access to vehicle features, like heated seats or remote-start keys, what proportion of British car buyers say they like a lot of luxury features in their car?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, latest data from YouGov Profiles shows that nearly two-thirds of British consumers (64%) who intend to buy a new or used car in the next 12 months would like a car with a lot of luxury features. Around a quarter (26%) disagree with the statement.

But examining this appetite for luxury features by the type of car people plan to buy reveals an interesting insight. Polling data reveals that consumers considering purchasing an electric or hybrid car are more interested in luxury features than traditional petrol and diesel car buyers.

Nearly three-quarters of possible electric car owners (73%) say they like a lot of luxury features in their cars. Around two-thirds of consumers who are considering buying a full hybrid (67%), mild hybrid (67%) or plug-in hybrid (66%) say they like a car with all the possible comforts.

Slightly fewer but still more than three in five future diesel (65%) and petrol (64%) car buyers also indicate they are looking for features providing the best in luxury.

One of the new luxury car features is the use of artificial intelligence. While many companies are working towards creating self-driving cars, even small advancements like AI software, sensors and real-time cameras have become selling points.

More than three-quarters of British consumers who intend to buy a new or used car and like a lot of luxury features (76%) think that in the future AI will help humans in most of their daily tasks. However, a similar share of these consumers are also worried about AI getting out of hand (79%).
