US: Mercedes-Benz to develop an EV charging network - Are customers keen to go the electric way?

Lesley Simeon - January 11th, 2023

Mercedes-Benz has announced its plan to develop a 10,000-strong charger network by 2030. Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, the network will be built across the US and Canada first, followed by China, Europe and other markets. Renewable energy company Mn8 Energy and EV charging firm, ChargePoint, will collaborate with the automotive brand on the project.

Once up and running, the chargers will be open to the general population. However, Mercedes-Benz owners will be able to reserve the stations in advance - but do they plan on going electric anytime soon?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 39% of current Mercedes-Benz customers expect to either buy a new car or trade in a car bought on finance for a new one, in the next 12 months.

Further, more than half (53%) of Mercedes-Benz’s current customers who expect to buy a new car in the coming 12 months would consider purchasing an electric vehicle (EV).

Among its customers who intend to buy a new car, 18% of Mercedes-Benz owners blame the high initial cost for not considering an EV. Charging time (14%), an insufficient number of charging stations (13%) and an inadequate range of models (13%) are the other top concerns keeping respondents from considering EVs.

Similarly, charging-related issues like lack of capabilities/space to charge at home (11%) and the overall hassle of charging (8%) are some other factors discouraging Mercedes-Benz owners in the US from opting for EVs.
