US: Torrid launches resale program – What’s customers’ take on going the second hand way?
Clothing retailer, Torrid, has partnered with resale platform, thredUP to launch its first resale scheme. The partnership will provide customers with a dedicated platform for generating prepaid shipping labels and shipping their box of “gently used” apparel, shoes and accessories to thredUP for free. In return, Torrid will hand out shopping credit for items sold and a limited-time bonus to encourage consumer participation. Customers can also choose their unsold items either to be recycled or returned to them.
Will Torrid’s resale program excite its customers about second hand purchases?
YouGov data shows that Torrid’s customers are more likely than the general US population to purchase second hand items.
According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 44% of Torrid’s current customers “agree” to some degree with the statement that “I prefer to buy things second hand rather than new.” Nearly four in ten (38%) of the general US population “agree” with the statement.
Ebay is popular amongst Torrid customers - 42% of them made purchases from the site in the last 12 months. Almost a third (32%) opted for vintage/thrift shops and just over a quarter (26%) haven’t bought any second hand items in the past 12 months.
