Global: Perception of electric cars among new and certified pre-owned car buyers
Electric cars have been gradually gaining traction in the global market over the past few years. With gas prices rising and it being environmentally sustainable, are electric cars going to be the future of the motor industry?
The latest data from YouGov Global Profiles – an audience intelligence tool – reveals that overall new car buyers are more likely to consider electric cars as the future of the motor industry than those who intend to purchase a certified pre-owned car in the next 12 months. This holds true across the different regions.
Nearly three-quarters of global consumers (74%) who intend to buy a new car in the next 12 months say that electric cars are the future of the motor industry. Consumers in the American continent (78%) are slightly more likely than the global audience to agree with the statement, the highest in all regions surveyed.
Consumers in MENA are a close second, with 76% of consumers agreeing with the statement.
While APAC consumers who intend to buy a new car are as likely as global respondents to agree, Europeans are not as likely to share the same opinion. Over three in five new car buyers in Europe (65%) think electric cars are the future, the lowest of all five regions.
Global consumers who intend to buy a certified pre-owned car in the next 12 months (68%) are slightly less likely to think of electric vehicles as the future of the motor industry compared to new car buyers.
American consumers (74%) in this category significantly outpace global respondents, followed by MENA consumers (72%) who agree with the statement.
Respondents in APAC who intend on buying a certified pre-owned car soon are on the same page as the global audience who agree (68%).
Europe once again finds itself at the bottom of all the regions. Only three in five certified pre-owned car buyers (60%) believe electric cars might dominate the motor industry.
Methodology: YouGov Global Profiles is a globally consistent audience dataset with 1000+ questions across 43 markets. The data is based on continuously collected data from adults aged 16+ years in China and 18+ years in other markets. The sample sizes for YouGov Global Profiles will fluctuate over time, however the minimum sample size is always c.1000. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from India and UAE, which use urban representative samples, and China, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, which use online representative samples.
