Global: Gamers’ favorite TV genres
In a recent YouGov survey, we asked gamers - those who spend at least 1 hour gaming on console, PC, mobile or handheld devices per week- across 43 markets which TV show genres they watch.
According to data from YouGov Global Profiles, comedy is the most popular genre globally, both amongst the gamers (53%) and the average adult (50%). In a distant second, two out of five gamers (40%) say that they watch animated TV content – elevating the genre into second place for our gaming group, compared to fourth for the general population. While enjoyed equally by both groups at 39%, documentaries come in third for gamers and second place for all adults.
Food, drink and cooking shows round out the top five TV genres for both groups (gamers, 32%; all adults, 31%). What this means is that, with the exception of animated TV, the TV-watching habits of gamers closely map those of the general global population.
But let’s drill into the top TV genres among gamers in Australia, Great Britain (GB), India and the US – and compare them to gamers globally.
At 60% in India, comedy over-indexes compared to both the global population and to the other markets we examine. Nevertheless, comedy is also the favourite across all other markets too (Australia, 53%; GB, 52%; US, 50%).
In Australia and GB, the second spot is taken by documentaries (45% and 49%) whereas in India and the US second place it is occupied by drama, at 40% and 39% respectively. Despite this second-place ranking in India and USA, drama is still more popular in Australia and Great Britain.
Interestingly, animated content, the second most popular genre among gamers globally, is tied for fourth in Australia (31%) and comes in last in Great Britain (31%). Similarly, documentaries round out the top five genres among Indian gamers (31%) despite being third among global gamers at 39%.
Food, drink and cooking shows are the fifth most popular type of shows for gamers globally and in Australia (31%) and the US (28%)

Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from India and UAE, which use urban representative samples, and China, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, which use online representative samples.
