Google plans to discontinue Currents, its users expected to migrate to Spaces
Currents will be phased out starting in 2023, and its “rarely used” features will be removed in Q1 2022.
In a blog post, Google said it's “planning to wind down” Currents, the replacement for Google Plus. Current users will instead be redirected to Spaces. Users will use Chat and Spaces as a substitute to Currents, which will soon be fully integrated into Gmail.
Google believes by shutting down Currents users won’t have to work in a “separate, siloed destination.” The company promises to make Spaces a more suitable replacement over the next year, stating that it will be a “support for larger communities and leadership communication” and more.
However, Workspaces administrators will be updated about future changes and the migration timeline. The list of “rarely used” features that will be discontinued or downgraded from Currents can be found in a support document.
