What are the most preferred ways to work out in the US and Britain?

Bodyweight exercise without any equipment or weights is the single most popular format of personal workout in the US (15%), according to data in YouGov Profiles. That form of exercise is a favourite among consumers in Britain too, although it shares the top spot with running (11%).

Bodyweight exercises performed with equipment and weights is also a popular category in both markets. One in 11 Brits say they work out in this manner (9%), making it the third-most preferred workout there. It takes second place in the American market, with one in seven consumers practising it when working out on their own (13%).

In general, Americans are likelier to perform each type of exercise, but the level of variance between the two markets differs across each exercise category. For instance, Americans are twice as likely as Brits to exercise with weights (12% vs 6%), but are about as likely to include running as one of their picks (12% vs 11%).

Cycling is another activity that features in the top five in both markets. One in 14 Brits (7%) and one in 11 Americans (9%) include cycling in the personal work out plans.
