Paul Röttger, Postdoctoral Researcher, MilaNLP Lab at Bocconi University

Paul Röttger is a postdoctoral researcher in Dirk Hovy's MilaNLP Lab at Bocconi University, where he explores the intersection of computation, language, and society. His current research focuses on evaluating and aligning social values in large language models.

In May 2023, Paul completed his PhD at the University of Oxford, supervised by Janet Pierrehumbert and Helen Margetts. His PhD centred on improving natural language processing models for hate speech detection and tackling challenges like language change and annotator subjectivity. He led the award-winning HateCheck project, which earned recognition in the Stanford AI Audit Challenge.

Paul also co-founded Rewire, a start-up committed to developing socially responsible AI for online safety. As CTO, he grew a technical team to over 10 members, leading projects for companies like Google and Meta. In March 2023, Rewire was acquired by ActiveFence.
