In Part 2 of our three-part study on Ramadan 2024 in Indonesia: Trends in Festive Shopping, THR spending and Mudik Travel, we unpack Muslim consumer expectations and expenditure plans for this year’s Tunjangan Hari Raya (THR) allowance.
How optimistic are consumers about receiving their THR allowances this Ramadan?
Latest research from YouGov Surveys show that, close to three in five Muslim consumers who observe Ramadan expect to receive their THR allowance this year (58%), while almost three in ten are unsure whether they will receive it (29%), and around an eighth don’t think they will get any (13%).
Among consumers who hold a full-time job, the proportion who expect to receive their THR allowance rises to seven in ten (70%), while a fifth are unsure (21%).
In contrast 56% who work part-time for 8-29 hours per week are optimistic about receiving their THR allowance, compared to 47% who work part-time for less than 8 hours per week.
How are consumers planning to use their THR allowances this Ramadan?
Close to three-fifths (58%) of Muslim consumers plan to funnel at least some of their THR allowance to their savings and towards Zakat (religious donations) this Ramadan.
Over half (55%) also plan to use at least some of their 2024 THR allowance for Ramadan shopping, ahead of giving it to family, friends or people they know who might be in need (48%).
This year’s THR allowance is also likely to provide financial relief and financial growth opportunities for over one in four consumers: 27% plan to use it to pay debts, and 26% to make financial investments.
Across generations, Gen Z are significantly more likely than older consumers to say they plan to top up their savings (65%) with their THR allowance this year – and much less likely to use them for paying Zakat (45%) and debts (20%), and for shopping (49%) and mudik travel expenses (19%).
In contrast, Millennials are much more likely than other generations to say they plan to gift some of their THR to their family, friends or co-workers (56%), pay off debts (33%) and mudik travel expenses (31%), while Gen X significantly are more likely than other generations to say they plan to use their THR allowance for Zakat donations (72%).
