GB: Hostelworld reports record half-year revenues - Are hostel-stays popular among holidaying Brits?
Online hostel-booking company Hostelworld has reported record revenues in the first half of this year with bookings up by 64% to reach 3.4 million. Similarly, revenue grew by 57% to touch €51.5 million (approximately £44.2m) in the six months to June 30, 2023.
We look at YouGov data to see what type of accommodation Britons typically stay in when on holiday.
According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioural consumer metrics - 4% of the general British population chooses to stay in hostels when on holiday.
Nearly half (48%) of this audience stays in hotels, 22% stay in rented apartments/houses and 19% stay in all-inclusive resorts. Bed and breakfast (18%), staying with family/friends (15%) and campsites (11%) are other accommodation types Britons choose for their holiday.
When it comes to methods chosen to book accommodation for a short leisure break, 47% of Brits who typically stay in hostels when holidaying book the stay through online hotel websites like Booking.com or Airbnb. By comparison, 36% of the general British population books holiday accommodation via online hotel websites.
Profiles data also shows that 28% of Brits who typically stay in hostels when holidaying opt for online travel websites like Expedia or Travelocity to book accommodation and 24% of them book directly on official websites.
We also see how much did Britons who typically stay in hostels when on vacation spent on their most recent holiday.
Profiles data shows that 29% of this audience and 16% of the general British population spent less than £249 on their most recent holiday.
Further, 19% of Brits who stay in hostels when on holiday spent between £250 and £499 on their last holiday and 12% spent between £500 and £749.
