Exploring global consumer interest in second-hand exercise and sports equipment
According to YouGov Surveys (Serviced) nearly a quarter of global consumers (24%) are willing to purchase second-hand exercise or sports equipment. The only category that registers a lower percentage in this regard is gaming consoles, with less than one in five consumers expressing a willingness to buy used options (19%).
Exploring the data by markets, in North America the second-hand exercise and sports equipment market is quite popular, with a third of United States (36%) and Canada markets (34%) showing interest. Mexico, however, demonstrates a lower interest, with one in seven consumers (15%) considering purchasing second-hand exercise and sports equipment.
In the United States, the willingness to buy second-hand exercise and sports equipment varies across different age groups. Among Americans aged 45-54, half of the consumers are likely to buy second-hand exercise equipment compared to other age groups. Consumers aged 25-34 (42%) and 35-44 (39%) also show significant interest, with about two in five considering such purchases. In contrast, interest declines among 18-24-year-olds (27%) and 55 and older age groups (29%), with less than three-tenths expressing a willingness to buy second-hand exercise and sports equipment.
In Europe, the second-hand exercise and sports equipment market varies significantly between markets. Britain (34%) leads the way, with about one-third of consumers considering buying second-hand sports equipment. The highest interest is found among those aged 35-44, with nearly half (48%) of the consumers willing to consider such purchases. This is followed by Britons aged 25-34 and 18-24, (44% and 42% respectively) expressing interest. The willingness to buy second-hand sports equipment declines among older age groups, with around one-third of consumers aged 45-54 (35%) and just about one in five of those aged 55 and older (21%) considering such purchases.
Poland (30%) and Sweden (29%) are more likely to be interested in second-hand exercise and sports equipment in comparison to Italy (20%), Spain (19%) Denmark (18%) and Germany (17%). France exhibits lower interest with one in seven consumers considering such purchases (15%).
In Asia, there are sharp variances by region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Singapore show the highest interest, with slightly more than one in five consumers (23% and 22% respectively) considering buying second-hand sports equipment. China (21%) and India (18%) have comparable percentages, with roughly one in five consumers expressing interest in second-hand exercise and sports equipment. Hong Kong and Indonesia, however, have much lower interest levels, with only about one in eight Hong Kong consumers (12%) and less than one-tenth of Indonesians (9%) considering such purchases.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 18 markets with sample sizes varying between 512 and 2034 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in February 2023. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
