What New Year resolutions are Britons setting for 2023?
Many Britons will be thinking ahead about what they want to accomplish in 2023 as 2022 comes to an end. We polled 2,073 nationally representative Britons to know what their New Year’s resolutions will be. This year, two in five Britons say they will not be making any resolutions for the upcoming year (42%).
Among those who will be setting resolutions, a third say they want to lose weight (32%). Nearly two in five women are more likely to make this resolution in comparison to men (28%). Breaking the data by ages, a fifth of adults aged 25-54 say their resolution for 2023 will be to join a gym.
More than one in 10 Britons say they either want to sleep more (15%), learn a new skill (15%), improve their relationships with their partner or family (14%), or wish to focus on their spiritual growth (11%). In all the mentioned cases, women are more likely to make such resolutions compared to men, except when it comes to improving their relationships where an equal proportion of British men and women are likely to make this resolution (14% each).
Out of 2,073 respondents polled 131 say they want to join a gym (6%). Nearly an equal proportion of men and women are likely to make this resolution (7% men and 6% women) but 18–24-year-olds (20%) and full-time students (15%) are more likely to make this resolution.
Less common resolutions were – join an ancestry website to find out about the family tree (3%), join a dating app (2%), spend less money on gambling (2%), and cut down on playing video games (1%).
Among those who selected ‘Other’, some popular answers include reading more, reducing/quitting smoking, quitting/reducing alcohol, getting healthy/ fit, walking more, and saving more.

Methodology
YouGov RealTime Omnibus provides quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. This study was conducted online on December 21, 2022 with a nationally representative sample of 2,073 adults in UK (aged 18+ years), using a questionnaire designed by YouGov. Data figures have been weighted by age, gender, education level, region, and social grade to be representative of all adults in Great Britain and reflect the latest ONS population estimates.
