US: No more plastic cups aboard Alaska Airlines flights - What do flyers think of sustainability?

Lesley Simeon - February 1st, 2023

In a move that is expected to eliminate more than 55 million plastic cups annually, Alaska Airlines has announced that it has completed the transition to serving in-flight beverages in paper cups. The airline’s first-class flyers will be served cocktails and soft drinks in reusable glasses. The SeaTac, Washington-based airline had started the process of cutting out plastic straws and stir sticks from their in-flight service in 2018 and followed it by removing in-flight plastic water bottles in 2021.

What do Alaska Airlines’ customers think of brands who try to become more sustainable and environment friendly?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - most of Alaska Airlines’ current customers (65%) agree with the statement that they “prefer brands that are sustainable.” This makes them more likely than the general US population (57%) to agree with the statement.

An almost similar proportion of Alaska Airlines customers (18%) and the US general population (20%) disagree with the statement that “(they) prefer brands that are sustainable.”
