US and GB: ChatGPT enters AI scene, evoking equal parts concern and cheer – How do people view AI?

Launched in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot is already being touted to come handy in processes like drug development, sentiment analysis and improving search function. What’s more, the generative AI-fed chatbot recently even made headlines for passing an MBA exam at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. While OpenAI’s founder, Sam Altman, has warned users against relying on ChatGPT “for anything important right now”, the software has already triggered discussions to the extent of possibly replacing human jobs in the future.

With the tech scene abuzz with ChatGPT, what do consumers have to say about artificial intelligence?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - an almost equal number of respondents in the US (45%) and Great Britain (46%) agree that “artificial intelligence is just the next step in evolution.”

But a majority of both Americans and Britons are also wary about the possible implications of AI development, if left unchecked. Further, 71% of Americans and 68% of Britons agree that they “have to pay attention so that development of artificial intelligence doesn’t get out of hand.”

Nonetheless, significant sections of both populations (58% in the US, 61% in Great Britain) agree that “in the future, artificial intelligence will help humans in most of their daily tasks.”
