US: Amazon could launch a sports streaming app - Do customers stream sports regularly?

Lesley Simeon - January 6th, 2023

Amazon is reportedly working on an app dedicated to streaming sports. Currently, the company offers live sports content on its Prime Video service - NFL’s Thursday Night Football, New York Yankees baseball games and Premier League soccer matches in the UK. The streaming service had also launched a sports talk show in November 2022.

Are current Amazon customers big on streaming sports?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 26% of Amazon’s customers watch American Football regularly on a streaming service/platform. This is followed by basketball (16%), baseball/softball (14%), boxing and soccer (8% each).

However, 54% of Amazon’s consumers - and 51% of the general US population - do not stream sports content. Perhaps Amazon’s reported push into sports content via its standalone sports streaming app can help the company bring more of its consumers into the sports streaming fold.
