US: Albertsons to offer plant-based meat alternatives – What does the customer appetite look like?
Alternative meat brand, Unlimeat, has announced it will start selling its products across Albertsons stores in the US. The Korean brand will introduce two items, Korean BBQ and pulled pork, in 1,500 of the American grocery chain’s stores, beginning 5 January 2023.
Are Albertsons’ customers big on plant-based meat alternatives?
According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - a significant number of Albertsons shoppers are likely to try plant-based offerings.
Less than half of the supermarket's regulars, 42%, agree with the statement that they are “open to substituting meat/dairy products with plant-based alternatives.” An equal number (42%) of the general US population agrees with the statement too.
However, Profiles data also shows that 44% of Albertsons’ customers never consume plant-based substitution products. On the other hand, 12% of the grocer’s shoppers eat plant-based substitution products several times a month. It will be interesting to see whether the availability of Unlimeat’s offerings at Albertsons will get more customers to try plant-based alternatives.
