US and GB: Tesla launches new home charger - does EV charging put off potential car buyers?
Tesla has launched a new version of its home charging station, the J1771 wall charger, that can be installed both indoors and outdoors to charge Tesla and non-Tesla EVs. While the new charging station is costlier, it allows for greater customer flexibility.
While Tesla is pushing for more accessible charging options for EVs, are concerns around charging EVs holding back consumers from considering an electric as their next car?
Data from YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics – shows that concerns around charging stop many consumers in the US and Great Britain (GB) who intend to buy a car in the coming year from going electric.
About 21% of Americans who intend to buy a car within the next year cite insufficient charging stations as a factor for not considering an EV. The corresponding number of Britons who intend to buy a new car is 25%.
Similarly, 18% of potential American car buyers and 21% of potential British car buyers say they do not have the capability or space to charge at home.
However, one in ten Americans (10%) is put off by the hassle of charging; this number doubles among Britons (20%).
While Tesla’s new charger might appeal to users looking for more flexibility, it will be interesting to see if the move will reduce apprehensions about EVs among potential car buyers.
