Global: On which devices are consumers using voice commands?
YouGov asked consumers across 18 international markets on which devices they have asked questions or issued voice commands in the last six months.
More than two in five (42%) globally say smartphones, while a fifth (20%) say smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. About a tenth of global consumers have issued voice commands on TV or TV remote (14%), laptop/desktop (13%), and car navigation (10%). Wearable tech is the least- used for voice commands, with only 6% having used the feature in the past six months. But habits vary widely across the world, especially when it comes to smartphone voice commands.
In the Asian market, more than half consumers from Indonesia (70%), China (65%), India (62%), UAE (56%), and Hong Kong (51%) have issued voice commands on their phone. About a fifth of Chinese consumers (21%) have used voice commands on tablets or for car navigation (18%) in the past six months – the most compared to the rest of the markets. India leads in using voice commands on laptops/desktops (29%) and TV or TV remote (21%).
In Europe, consumers from Spain and Italy have used the voice command feature of a smartphone (49% each), tablets (12% and 13%), laptop/desktops (17% and 16%), car navigation (12% and 16%), and TV or TV remote (18% each) the most. Britain ranks at the top in issuing voice commands to smart speakers (34%).
In Mexico, more than one in 10 have used voice commands on wearable devices (12%), which is the highest across 18 markets. The US and Canadian markets show similar trends, with a third (37% and 33%) having used voice commands on smartphones and about a tenth on car navigation (10% and 13%), tablets (8% and 13%), and laptops (10% and 11%). About a fifth of US consumers (21%) and a quarter of Canadians have used voice commands on smart speakers in the past six months.

Methodology
YouGov RealTime Omnibus provides quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18 and over in 18 markets with sample sizes varying between 507 and 2004 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in June 2022. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
