Pet ownership has surged in recent years, shaping consumer behavior across multiple industries, including hospitality. Insights from YouGov Profiles provide a detailed look at pet ownership trends in the U.S. and how they impact travel and lodging decisions.
The survey indicates that 44% of Americans own a dog, making it the most popular pet. A third (34%) report having a cat, while 12% own other types of pets.
One major challenge for pet owners is the rising cost of pet care. More than half (53%) of respondents agree that "it costs too much to take care of pets these days," reflecting concerns over the increasing prices of pet food, veterinary services, and other expenses.
While some pet owners integrate their animals into nearly every aspect of their life, others take a more selective approach. The survey finds that 42% of pet owners agree with the statement, "I take my pets everywhere that I can," while 46% disagree.
For those who do bring their dogs and cats along, hotel selection becomes a crucial factor. Insights from YouGov BrandIndex highlight which hotel brands resonate most with these travelers.
Pet owners favor Holiday Inn Express and Marriott
For pet owners who prioritize bringing their animals along, Holiday Inn Express emerges as the most considered accommodation, with 38% considering it for their stays. Marriott follows closely at 34%, along with Holiday Inn (32%) and Hilton (32%).
Mid-range hotel chains remain particularly popular, with Hampton Inn (30%) and Courtyard by Marriott (29%) ranking high among pet-owning travelers. Additionally, Airbnb (28%) emerges as a preferred alternative, likely due to its flexible pet policies and home-like accommodations. Rounding out the top 10 are Comfort Inn (27%), Sheraton (26%), and Best Western (24%), suggesting that many travelers still lean toward traditional hotel brands when bringing pets along.
How do pet owners’ preferences compare to the general public?
The general population's hotel considerations show slight variations in comparison to people who travel with pets. Marriott tops the list among all US adults, with 37% considering it for their stays, followed closely by Hilton at 36%. Holiday Inn (34%) and Holiday Inn Express (33%) remain strong contenders, though their rankings shift slightly.
Courtyard by Marriott (31%) and Hampton Inn (28%) maintain similar appeal among the broader population. Around a quarter of Americans would consider Best Western (26%) and Airbnb (26%). Comfort Inn (25%) and Hilton Garden Inn (24%) complete the list.
