Did Britons watch sporting events at home, in person, or at the pub in 2024?
2024 is now behind us – and from Carlos Alcaraz’s second triumph over Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon to England’s loss to Spain during the Euro 2024 final, it did not lack for incident. But how did people watch these events?
Data from YouGov Sport reveals that, for the most part, they watched from the comfort of their own homes. This was particularly true of the Wimbledon final (86% who watched the tournament did so at home), the Grand Prix (81%), the World Darts Championship Final (77%), and the Euro 2024 final (75%), but it was also true of every event we polled.
We can see some evidence that certain sports are more likely to be enjoyed in a communal fashion. For example, 12% of those who watched either tournament saw the Six Nations and Euro 2024 finals out of home (e.g. in a bar or pub), and 11% did the same with the Carabao Cup finals and Liverpool vs. Brentford’s Premier League clash on 25 August 2024.
The Joshua-Dubois fight also saw a majority watching at home (66%) but a fifth (19%) watched at a friend’s house (perhaps owing to the financial cost of watching periodic pay-per-view fights). That said, viewers of the Carabao Cup final and Liverpool vs. Brentford’s Premier League clash were nearly as likely to have done so with a pal.
In-person attendance was generally sparse – topping out at 6% for various events. Financial expense, travel, and a finite number of tickets may have played a role here.
