The popularity of 2D, 3D, 4D and IMAX screenings among Americans
A new YouGov survey asked 2,337 US adults about the types of film screenings they attend. The results reveal that 2D cinema is the most popular choice, with 28% of all respondents attending these screenings. Younger adults aged 18-34 are the most frequent attendees at 36%. Americans with an income of $80k or more have the highest attendance for 2D cinema at 40%.
IMAX screenings are attended by 22% of respondents. Adults aged 35-54 (27%) and those with an income of $80k and above (28%) are more likely to attend such screenings. Parents or guardians of children under 18 also have a higher attendance rate for IMAX at 28%.
3D cinema is attended by 19% of American adults, with men (21%) slightly more likely to attend than women (18%). This type of screening is most popular among those aged 18-34, with 33% attendance. Parents or guardians of children under 18 are more likely to attend 3D cinema at 31%.
Big screen events attract 12% of Americans. Men (14%), young adults (17%), and those with incomes of $80k or more (15%) are more likely to attend such screenings.
4DX cinema, a more immersive experience, is the least attended with only 7% overall. Younger adults aged 18-34 again lead in attendance at 14%, while the older age group of 55+ has just 1% attendance.
Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. This study was conducted online on 19-23 July 2024, with a nationally representative sample of 2,337 adults (aged 18+ years) in the US, using a questionnaire designed by YouGov. Data figures have been weighted by age, race, gender, education, and region to be representative of all adults in the US (18 years or older), and reflect the latest population estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
