Singaporeans opt for TV broadcasts for Paris 2024 Olympics, but Gen Z prefers social media updates

As Paris prepares to host the 2024 Olympics, latest data from YouGov shows that among Singaporeans who plan to follow the Paris 2024 Olympics, most (56%) will tune into TV broadcasts to keep up with the games. Nearly half of them will follow social media updates (46%), while two in five will opt for coverage in newspapers or news sites (41%) or online streaming (39%).

One in seven will watch the games at a sports bar or other broadcasting venues (14%), while less than one in ten (8%) Singaporeans intend to catch the action live in Paris at an Olympic venue.

Men are more likely than women to follow the Olympics via TV broadcast (60% men vs 51% women) and online streaming (45% vs 33%). They are also more likely to read coverage on news sites or papers (45% vs 36%).

Among the age groups, 18-24 years olds are most likely to catch the action online (56%), while 55+ adults are most likely to watch the games on TV (64%) or read about them in newspapers or websites (48%).

When asked why they watch the Olympics, more than half of Singaporeans who watch the games (54%) said they do so, understandably, to enjoy the spectacle and excitement of the event. Additionally, 46% tune in to witness participating athletes’ feats and performances, while 45% watch to support their country’s athletes.

More than a quarter of viewers (28%) watch the games to evade the feeling of missing out, while a fifth do so because their friends and family do so (20%).

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on a survey of 1001 adults aged 18+ years in Singapore conducted in March 2024.
