How is food, beverage, and alcohol spending expected to change in the next 12 months?

Against the backdrop of tighter budgets, shrinking product sizes and pricier shopping trips, YouGov looks at how spending budgets around the world hold up, particularly when it comes to food, beverages, and alcohol.

A new YouGov survey asked consumers across 17 international markets how they see their future spending on food and drink categories.

Food and beverages

Nearly half of all consumers across markets (49%) say they plan to maintain their spending on food and beverages. At nearly a quarter (22%), global consumers intend to spend more in the next 12 months. A similar proportion of consumers (23%) plan on spending less on food and beverages.

Let’s look at where spending is expected to increase or decrease most in this category.

  • Expected increases highest in: India (39%), Mexico (29%), Germany (27%), Indonesia (27%) and Singapore (26%)
  • Expected cutbacks highest in: France (34%), Australia (33%), Great Britain (28%), Canada (27%) and Sweden (26%)

Alcohol

Three in ten consumers (30%) plan to spend less than usual on alcohol over a 12-month period, while 28% of shoppers would spend the same amount. Fewer than one in ten consumers (7%) say they will spend more on alcohol.

Just over three in ten of those polled (31%) say they would not buy alcohol altogether.

Here are a few key insights into the expected changes to alcohol buying at the market level.

  • Expected increases highest in: India (14%), Australia (11%), Mexico (10%) and US (9%)
  • Expected cutbacks highest in: Spain (39%), Mexico (38%), France (37%), Italy (36%), Poland (35%) and Canada (35%).
