New data reveals thresholds for cold-weather sports attendance
A recent NFL game where the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Miami Dolphins proved to be a testament to the tenacity not just of the athletes but of the supporters braving -4 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -20 degrees. So, just how much cold weather are fans willing to withstand when it comes to supporting their teams?
A recent survey conducted by YouGov asked 5,109 US adults about the coldest temperature they would be willing to brave to attend an outdoor professional sports event. Just 2% of respondents stated they would endure below-zero Fahrenheit conditions to cheer on their teams in person. This thin slice of die-hards stands in stark contrast to the 23% who claim they would never be willing to attend an event in cold weather.
It's notable that a combined 28% of respondents are willing to attend matches with temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, which is slightly below freezing point in Celsius.
The spirit of sports fans to brave the cold is clear, yet practical limits do exist. For the business side of sports, leveraging this data can lead to more strategic decision-making that caters to fan comfort, potentially driving attendance and enhancing the overall appeal of watching live events — no matter the weather.
