APAC Biggest Brand Movers – December 2023

APAC Biggest Brand Movers highlights the ten brands that have registered the most statistically significant month-on-month upticks in consumer perception metrics across a selection of Asia-Pacific markets. These rankings identify the brands which have logged the greatest number of improvements across 13 metrics each month – ranging from aided brand awareness and corporate reputation, to purchase consideration and customer satisfaction. The data is taken from YouGov BrandIndex, a syndicated brand tracker which continuously collects data on thousands of brands around the globe every day.  

Australia: Nivea lands top spot with online shopping offers

Nivea is Australia’s Biggest Brand Mover for December.

The skincare brand made gains in 13 out of 13 BrandIndex metrics, in the Media and Communication category (Aided Brand Awareness, Ad Awareness, WOM Exposure, Buzz), Brand Perception category (General Impression, Value, Corporate Reputation, Customer Satisfaction, Recommendation, Quality) and Purchase Funnel category (Consideration, Purchase Intent, Current Customer).

The Beiersdorf-owned label recently ran promotions with supermarket chain Woolworths and online pharmacy Chemist Warehouse. Shoppers who purchased any Nivea product(s) worth $15 or more from Woolworths online stood to win a $12,000 Woolworths eGift Card in a lucky draw, while shoppers who purchased any product from Nivea’s SUN range at Chemist Warehouse were entitled to a free Nivea-branded swim bag while stocks last.

Olay is the runner-up, with the beauty and personal care brand scoring upticks in seven metrics across the Media and Communication and Brand Perception categories. Virgin Australia takes third place, with the airline seeing improvements in six metrics across the Media and Communication, Brand Perception and Purchase Funnel categories.

Tech giant Apple and financial services company Allianz round out the top five, making gains in six and five metrics respectively.

Indonesia: Mr D.I.Y drums up buzz with World Branding Award

Mr D.I.Y is Indonesia’s Biggest Brand Mover for December.

The hardware store made gains in nine out of 13 BrandIndex metrics, in the Media and Communication category (Aided Brand Awareness, Ad Awareness, WOM Exposure, Buzz) and Brand Perception category (General Impression, Corporate Reputation, Customer Satisfaction, Recommendation, Quality).

The home improvement retailer was recently recognised as Southeast Asia’s most preferred DIY store at the 16th World Branding Awards, where it picked up the “Top Home Improvement Retail Brand” for the region. Mr D.I.Y was also one of Indonesia’s biggest brand movers in November.

Epson is the runner-up, with the printer brand scoring upticks in eight metrics across the Media and Communication, Brand Perception and Purchase Funnel categories. Nikon takes third place, with the camera and imaging products brand seeing improvements in seven metrics across all three categories.

Samsung Consumer Electronics (e.g. computer laptops/desktops, printers, PC accessories, cameras) and tech giant Google round out the top five, making gains in five metrics each.

Thailand: Hi-Q scores with 12.12 e-commerce deals on Lazada

Hi-Q is Thailand’s Biggest Brand Mover for December.

The infant formula brand made gains in five out of 13 BrandIndex metrics, in the Media and Communication category (Aided Brand Awareness) and Brand Perception category (General Impression, Value, Recommendation, Quality).

The Dumex-owned label recently ran an online shopping sale from 12-14 December on e-commerce platform Lazada, offering discounts on various milk products as well as the chance to earn a free Huawei MatePad tablet.

Starbucks is the runner-up, scoring upticks in four metrics across the Brand Perception and Purchase Funnel categories. Isuzu takes third place, with the automaker seeing improvements in three metrics across the two categories as well.

Beverage maker Tipco and F&B chain Black Canyon round out the top five, making gains in three metrics each.

Biggest Brand Movers for December 2023 ranked brands according to the number of statistically significant score increases they achieved across the following BrandIndex metrics, between November and December 2023.

Media and Communication Metrics

  • Aided Brand Awareness – Whether or not a consumer has ever heard of a brand
  • Ad Awareness – Whether a consumer has seen or heard an advertisement for a brand in the past two weeks
  • Word of Mouth Exposure – Whether a consumer has talked about a brand with family or friends in the past two weeks
  • Buzz – Whether a consumer has heard anything positive or negative about a brand in the past two weeks (net score)

Brand Perception Metrics

  • General Impression – Whether a consumer has a positive or negative impression of a brand
  • Customer Satisfaction – Whether a consumer is currently a satisfied or dissatisfied customer of a particular brand
  • Quality – Whether a consumer considers a brand to represent good or poor quality
  • Value – Whether a consumer considers a brand to represent good or poor value for money
  • Recommendation – Whether a consumer would recommend a brand to a friend or colleague or not
  • Corporate Reputation – Whether a consumer would be proud or embarrassed to work for a particular brand

Purchase Funnel Metrics

  • Consideration – Whether a consumer would consider a brand or not the next time they are in the market for a particular product
  • Purchase Intent – Whether a consumer would be most likely or unlikely to purchase a specific product
  • Current Customer – Whether a consumer has purchased a given product or not within a specified period of time
