Globally, are consumers worried about robots taking over jobs?
Conversations around ChatGPT, generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics have dominated headlines in the recent past. As the world debates the extent to which these technologies can impact work and life, we explore to what degree are consumers globally worried about robots taking over jobs.
In this piece, we look at YouGov data to note consumers’ concerns across 18 international markets.
While more than half of global consumers (51%) say they are either ‘very worried’ or ‘somewhat worried’ about robots taking over jobs, around 40% are either ‘not very worried’ or ‘not at all worried’ about this issue.
Globally, more women than men are worried about robots taking over jobs (55% vs. 47%).
A deeper look at consumers’ sentiments towards robots taking over jobs across different markets reveals interesting nuances.

A majority (71%) of Indonesians say they are ‘very worried’ or ‘somewhat worried’ about robots taking over jobs and so do 67% of urban Indians.
Similar proportions of consumers in Mexico (62%) and France (60%) say they are worried about robots taking over jobs.
Further, nearly half of Americans (47%) say they are worried about robots taking over jobs, and 42% of consumers in Great Britain share the concern.
Equal proportions of consumers in the UAE and Spain (58% each) share the same worry, while the percentage in countries like Italy (56%), Australia (55%) and Singapore (54%) surpasses the halfway mark.
By comparison to other global markets, fewer consumers in Sweden and Denmark are worried about robots taking over jobs. Just over a third of the general Swedish population (34%) and a quarter of consumers in Denmark (25%) are concerned about this topic.

Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 18 markets with sample sizes varying between 512 and 2,007 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in March 2023. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
