Which European teams are creating a Buzz in the off-season – June 2023

With the European football season taking a complete breather in the month of June, most Buzz moves in this edition of the Football Buzz Movers can be attributed to the talk around transfers.

In the UK, Tottenham Hotspur registered a 5.7-point jump to claim the top spot. The club created headlines in June after inking a deal with England attacker James Maddison. The club may have also generated some goodwill from their announcement of a match at home against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in August – the proceeds from which will go to Shakhtar’s charitable foundation in support of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Chelsea claim the second spot with a 5.6-point jump. The club’s most noteworthy transfer news in June revolved around the signing of Nicolas Jackson on an eight-year deal, while their pursuit of Moises Caicedo has also made news. Southampton round off the list, with an improvement of 4.9 points – possibly a result of mean reversion after a severe hit to Buzz scores in May as the club slipped into the Championship following relegation from the Premier League.

Over in Spain, it is France’s PSG (+5.2) that claim the top spot. In recent weeks, PSG secured the Ligue 1 title, but they have also been in the news about star forward Kylian Mbappe choosing not to extend his contract at the club after 2024. The 24-year-old is being hotly pursued by Spanish giants Real Madrid. Valencia CF (+4.6) and Deportivo Alaves (+3.4) round off the list in Spain for June.

Hertha BSC (+4.9) claim the top spot in Germany after a rebound in their Buzz scores following the confirmation of the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga in May. Vfb Stuttgart’s (+3.2) effort to stave off relegation with a comfortable win over Hamburg in their promotion/relegation play-off likely played a key role in Buzz uptick.

In France, FC Nantes claim the top spot with a Buzz uptick of 4.7 points in June amid an update that Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed was set to stay with the club. FC Metz, who made the jump back to Ligue 1, also feature in the list (+4.2). Liverpool (+3.1) round off the ranking in France.

Cagliari Calcio, having dramatically secured promotion back into Serie A after a one-year absence, gained 4.6 points on the Buzz ticker in Italy. The story of the club’s re-entry into the top flight was made more special as it happened under Claudio Ranieri’s second stint as the club’s coach – three decades after his first. US Lecce (+1.5) and Manchester City (+1.1) round off the list in Italy, albeit with modest upticks.
