Manchester City creates a Buzz amid rise to the top – Football Buzz movers for April 2023

Manchester City’s dominant showing across competitions in April has led to it featuring as a top five club in the Buzz Movers’ charts in various European markets.

Each month, YouGov Sport highlights the football clubs that saw the biggest month-over-month increase in Buzz scores in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. A club’s Buzz score is a net measure based on responses to two questions: “Over the past two weeks, which of the following teams have you heard something positive about?” and “Now which of the following teams have you heard something negative about?”. By calculating the difference between these two scores, we create our Buzz metric.

Most notable of Man City’s exploits was the club’s ascent to top spot in the Premier League, edging past Arsenal. The team also progressed to the semi-final of the Champions League after defeating Bayern Munich. In the FA Cup, they won the semi-final against Sheffield United, setting up a final against cross-town rivals Manchester United.

Manchester City not only tops Buzz charts in the UK (+6.1), but also feature in the top five in Spain (+5.9), Germany (+2.8), France (+2) and Italy (+0.7).

Newcastle United take the second spot among UK consumers, with a 5.6-point gain in a month where they won six out of their seven matches. The only match they lost was against Aston Villa (+5.1), who claim a close third spot in the UK. Crystal Palace (+4.6) and Burnley (+2.2) round off the top five in the UK.

Over in Spain, Sevilla claimed a whopping 11-point increased in Buzz scores to top the list of improvers. Not only did they win four out of their five La Liga matches in April, but outclassed Manchester United in their Europa League quarter-final joust. Real Madrid (+5.3) sit at the third spot, while Real Betis (+4.7) and CA Osasuna (+4.4) close off the list.

In Germany, SC Freiburg (+4) takes the Buzz crown for April, after having defeated giants Bayern Munich in their DFB Pokal quarter-final. Bayer Leverkusen (+3.3) take the second spot, perhaps propped up by their advance to the Europa League semi-final. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (+2.9), Man City (+2.8) and Real Madrid (+2) are the other teams that moved the needle in Germany.

Manchester United claim the top spot in France with a 3.7-point boost. FC Metz (+3.1), Olympique Lyonnais (+2.9), Man City (+2) and RC Strasbourg Alsace (+1.7) are the other teams in the top five among the French public.

In Italy, Buzz scores improved most significantly for AC Milan (+7.8) as the side sealed a place in the Champions League semi-final clash against cross-town rivals Inter. Real Madrid (+4.2), who also feature in the Champions League semi-final, claim the second spot. AS Roma (+1.8), AC Monza (+0.8) and Man City (+0.7) round off the list with relatively modest gains.
