Do global consumers anticipate hikes in the cost of gym memberships?

A majority of global consumers, approximately three in five (58%), believe that the cost of gym membership will surge in the upcoming 12 months while over one-third say it will remain the same (36%) according to YouGov Surveys (Serviced). While this viewpoint is significant, it still places gym memberships among lowest on the list of product or service categories where consumers anticipate price hikes.

Consumer opinion on the increase in gym membership prices varies by market. In Asia, the expectations for a gym membership price increase are highest in Singapore, where seven in 10 consumers believe prices will go up. In India (64%), almost two-thirds of consumers share the same expectation, while in the UAE (50%) half of all consumers foresee an increase.

Indonesia (37%), in comparison, has a significantly lower percentage with slightly more than one in three consumers anticipating higher prices. Hong Kong stands out as the market where nearly half of consumers say prices will remain the same (48%) while over one-third (37%) predict a decrease.

Turning to Europe, we see a generally higher expectation of increasing gym membership prices. In Poland (73%), nearly three-quarters of consumers believe prices will go up, followed by Great Britain and France (69% each). Italy (62%) and Spain (59%) are slightly more likely to expect price increase compared to Germany (57%), Sweden (57%) and Denmark (55%).

In Mexico (66%) and Canada (63%) about two-thirds of consumers anticipate an increase in gym membership costs but when it comes to the United States the percentage drops to 48% of consumers expecting higher prices.
