Navigating the global landscape of second-hand phones and its demand
A new YouGov Surveys (Serviced) finds that a quarter (27%) of global consumers express their willingness to consider purchasing second-hand phones. This places phones in the middle of our list of product category in terms of consideration rates for second-hand options, ahead of exercise/ sports equipment (24%) and gaming consoles (19%).
The second-hand phone market has a significant presence in Asia. In Indonesia (35%) and UAE (32%), over one-third of consumers are considering buying second-hand phones, while in India, more than a quarter of consumers (27%) share this sentiment. China and Singapore also have a noticeable interest in second-hand phones, with one in four Chinese consumers (26%) and one in five Singaporean consumers (20%) considering such purchases. Hong Kong, however, has a much lower interest, with approximately one in eight consumers (13%) expressing a preference for second-hand phones.
In Europe, the second-hand phone market shows considerable variation between countries. Britain (35%) and Poland (29%) both have a strong interest, with about one-third of consumers considering buying second-hand phones in each country. Sweden (28%) and France (27%) display similar tendencies, with slightly more than a quarter of consumers in each nation expressing interest in second-hand phones. Spain and Germany have comparable percentages, with just over a quarter of consumers considering these purchases (27% and 26% respectively). In contrast, Italy and Denmark show a weaker interest, with nearly one in four Italian consumers (23%) and less than one in five Danish consumers (19%) open to second-hand phones.
In North America, the second-hand phone market is less popular compared to the European and Asian markets. In Canada, one in four consumers are considering buying second-hand phones (25%), while in the United States, only slightly more than one in five consumers share this interest (21%). Mexico, however, demonstrates a slightly higher interest, with over a quarter of consumers (27%) considering purchasing second-hand phones.
In summary, the second-hand phone market is most prominent in Asia and Europe, with Indonesia, Britain, and Poland leading the way. North America exhibits a lower overall interest in second-hand phones, particularly in the United States. Methodology: YouGov Surveys: Serviced provide quick survey results from nationally representative or targeted audiences in multiple markets. The data is based on surveys of adults aged 18+ years in 18 markets with sample sizes varying between 512 and 2034 for each market. All surveys were conducted online in February 2023. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples, and Indonesia and Hong Kong, which use online representative samples.
