Tech: 2022 trends and insights round-up of the UK market
In this piece, we’re rounding up this year’s highlights of our content on the tech industry in the UK market.
2022 began with the threat of the Omicron variant, but as the global pandemic loosened its grip, economic worries started to rear their heads. Inflation soared and subsequently drove up the cost of living. Coupled with global supply chain issues which increased the cost of electronic goods, more than one in 10 Britons told us that they had noticed that prices had gone up a lot (16%). Although nearly two in five consumers were looking to cut back on tech purchases as a result of the cost of living crisis (38%), more than more half were willing to spend amount the same as last year on consumer electronics such as smartphones, televisions and consoles (55%).
Security was another cause of concern for Britons this year, with more than half worried about data privacy when using the internet (56%). YouGov data revealed that a third of consumers don’t know how to protect their personal details online (37%). Tech companies need to work hard to win consumer confidence as a third say they don’t trust them at all with their personal data (29%). Data concerns are on the uptick among health app users, with three-quarters of Britons saying data security is important when choosing apps that store their health data (74%).
Looking at other forms of tech, Britons lead the European market in chatbots usage (23%) in the European market. A fifth of consumers have never used a QR code. But voice commands on smart speakers are used by a third of Britons (34%). More than half consumers also use biometric security features like fingerprint and face recognition on some or all tech devices (55%).
