US: Luxury retailer LuisaViaRoma to debut a store in New York – But do Americans want to splurge?

Italian luxury retailer LuisaViaRoma announced plans to open its first international store in New York in 2023. Apart from a flagship store in Florence, Italy, the brand only has a global ecommerce presence. The upcoming 13,000-square-foot store in New York’s Manhattan area follows a pop-up concept store outing in the US back in 2018.

Ahead of LuisaViaRoma’s American brick-and-mortar debut, what are American consumers’ plans for luxury shopping in the coming months?

According to YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - fifth of Americans (21%) are likely or very likely to purchase luxury goods in the next 12 months. A more significant section of the general US population (62%) reported that they are unlikely to go luxury shopping.

Breaking down the habits of respondents who are likely to purchase luxury goods in the next 12 months, 8% tend to shop for clothes and shoes entirely offline, while 15% make their purchases mostly offline. On the other hand, more than half (52%) of the respondents buy clothes and shoes either all or mostly online.
