US: Honda to build hydrogen-powered cars in the US: Do any Americans own this engine type currently?

Honda has announced plans to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell cars in the US in 2024. The Japanese carmaker will begin with the CR-V compact SUV, replacing its hydrogen-powered sedan, the Clarity Fuel Cell – which was available from 2017 to 2020. While the existing CR-V is available as a gas engine hyrbid with no plug-in feature, the hydrogen powered variant will have a plug-in feature.

What do engine preferences in the US currently look like, and does a Hydrogen-powered vehicle feature in the list at all?

According to data from YouGov Profiles - which covers demographic, psychographic, attitudinal and behavioral consumer metrics - 1% each of Honda’s customers and the general US population currently own vehicles with hydrogen-powered engines.

Gas engines are the standard – with 88% of current Honda customers and 70% of the general population owning vehicles with this engine-type. At 7%, fully hybrid vehicles are at a distant second among Honda customers, while the same number of the general US population owns vehicles with a diesel engine.

Profiles data also shows that 1.6% of Honda’s current customers and 3% of the general population would consider purchasing a Hydrogen-powered vehicle. When it comes to purchasing EVs, there is a bit more appetite among consumers. 11% of Honda’s consumers and 14% of the general population would consider going electric with their next car purchase.

Perhaps initiatives like Honda’s decision to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell cars might help put hydrogen vehicles on the long road to becoming a viable alternative to gas-powered engines.
