Do Americans think EVs are important in curbing climate change?

Over the past year lawmakers in the US have continued taking steps to encourage the production and use of cleaner automobiles and zero emission vehicles, evidenced in particular in two recent announcements – first, a ruling by the state of California banning the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035, and second, the announcement of the first round of funding for a National EV Charging Network by President Joe Biden at the Detroit Auto Show.

Data from a recent YouGov RealTime survey reveals that a quarter of all adults in the US (24%) think that driving an EV instead of a gas-fueled car is ‘very important’ to curb climate change, while almost a third (28%) believe that it is ‘somewhat important’ to do so.

Data also reveals that younger Americans are bigger believers in an EVs’ role in curbing climate change compared to older US consumers.

While two out of three 18-34-year-olds (59%) and 35-54-year-olds (58%) think that driving EVs is important to varying degrees, more than a third of American adults aged above 55 (36%) assign no importance to the choice of engine. Around one in seven Americans aged above 55 (14%) also think that driving an electric vehicle is ‘not very important’ in keeping climate change in check.

Interestingly, while an almost equal number of American men and women think that driving EVs is either ‘very important’ (22% and 25% respectively) or ‘somewhat important’ (27% and 30% respectively), nearly twice as many women (12%) as men (7%) are unsure of the significance of choosing EVs over gas-fueled cars.
