US: Flight delays and cancellations for air travelers this summer

It’s clear that demand for vacations is up and that the skies have been getting increasingly busy this year. The latest data from
reveals that intent to take an international vacation jumped from 15% in January 2022 to 19% in June.
This surge in demand, combined with airline staffing shortages and a packed schedule of flights this summer season, has been a recipe for cancellations and delays, especially over holiday weekends like Memorial Day and July Fourth.
New survey data from
reveals that roughly two in five recent air travelers (39%) in the US experienced a delay or cancellation this year. That includes more than a third of air travelers (35%) whose most recent flight was delayed and 4% who said their flight was outright cancelled.
Most people who traveled by air this year said that their most recent flight was not delayed or cancelled (62%).
Among those travelers whose most recent flight was delayed or cancelled, 44% say they waited up to two hours before boarding. Three in 10 (30%) say they had to wait between two and five hours and 15% say their flight was delayed for more than five hours.
